Warning
I read in the Telegraph last weekend that if a driver has not been booked for 10 years he/she can be let off with a warning.
The catch is that you have to write in and tell the RTA, and as this "loop hole" is not well advertised, not many good drivers benefit.
As we have had school zones for years now and as they work so well, maybe the RTA can advise drivers about the "10 year rule" on their overhead signs and on thr radio, instead of warning us about school zones.
Last June I wrote in on behalf of a old age pensioner lady who was caught out at the Gymea school zone. Her husband told me she hadn't ever been booked in 30 years of driving.
I was told later, that even after my letter, she still had to pay.
I will go back to get more details and try again, if they want.
The whole idea that we have to ask for a warning is wrong.
Before the ticket is sent the drivers record should be checked.
It has always been the older drivers that I feel get shafted at school zones and many with clean driving records.
They are the first that should get a friendly warning.
Like the 85 year old, I wrote about on the 8/2/05 "without fear or favour"
He got his license just after WWII and he was sprung at the Gymea school zone and when got a fine in the mail, he just paid it.
He didn't know about the 10 year rule.
It was his first ever traffic fine.
How many other first ever fines are from school zones.
The idea of school zones is great but we have to know when it's school zone time.
How's this for an idea, "flashing lights" at appropriate school zones that activate at school zone time.
Thanks for your continued interest
