My emails to the Roads Minister. First posted. 9/10/07
Three drivers went past and didn't see or ignored my message and would've tripped the camera I juet don't stand out enough.

Out of "uniform" and no signs I counted cars yesterday that flashed the speed camera..... 31 will gets surprizes in the mail

Thanks Alex that would make some drivers think.

I predicted trouble on 25 July and after giving the highly paid brains at the RTA time to also notice the problem, I emailed the Roads Minister Mr Eric Roozendaal.
All that was needed was one phone call from him to get a flashing light unit installed at Egdbaston st, he is the Transport Minister after all.

Subject: school zone
Dear Minister,
I would like to bring to your attention a situation at a school zone on King Georges rd. Beverly hills.
There are flashing lights at this zone and now also a new set of speed cameras, but a lot of drivers don't realize that the whole shopping strip is a school zone.
Because it's such a long zone, (.9 klm) can a second warning light unit be added to the school zone sign that's half way, heading South towards Hurstville, similar to the one already on the other side of the road.
Without going on in detail here, my concern about this school zone is explained, with photos, on my web site www.schoolzonesanta.com
Thank you for your time
Regards Hans Stephens

No reply, so I rang, and was told that I hadn't added an address
So I wrote again with full address and phone number.

Dear sir.
As the situation at the Beverly Hills school zone is only getting worse could you please have a look at the last couple of pages on www.schoolzonesanta.com
Thank you
Hans Stephens

This is the page on the day I sent the E-mail.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
What is needed at King Georges and Edgbaston Beverly Hills is get one of these flashing light units

and put it where this school zone sign is on the right

and I would say that would help with the school zone "speeding" for drivers heading south.
Drivers now just cruise down this divided road after traffic lights change at Morgan st forgetting all about the school zone.
JUST IMAGINE THE NUMBER OF DRIVER THAT WILL BE CAUGHT WHEN THEY TAKE AWAY THE LARGE TRAILER MOUNTED WARNING SIGNS
There has to be more 60 signs (because it's 70 both sides of the Beverly Hill shops) and if a larger school zone sign with Flashing lights had been installed at Edgbaston steet, I don't think the RTA and ultimatly, Mr Roozendaal would have this problem.

No reply, so I tried again.

Dear sir ,
I have written and phoned but have as yet not heard back from your office.
I once wrote to Mr Costa and received a reply 6 months later from Mr Tripodi.
If you would like an update on the Beverly Hills school zone perhaps you could have a look at last nights entry on my website.
Things are better for motorists at the moment

Thankyou for your time.

I was at Beverly Hills slowing traffic the day I wrote the last email so the drivers fared better.
Back at Beverly Hills tomorrow
....................................................................
This is the page I wrote on 19th Sept.
........................................................................
To stand out a little more, I had to revert back to my santa gear.

I can guarantee that very few speeding drivers got past me this morning's and afternoon school zone time, endangering school children.
Most drivers were receptive and grateful, though one did call out for me to get off the drugs, another called out that I'd lost weight
...........................................................................................................................................
Speed cameras have there place, but to catch the bad drivers more highway patrol in unmarkd cars are needed.
I don't think more cameras and less highway patrol is the way to go, but what would I know, I'm just an aging carpet layer.
BURN BABY BURN
In England where they have 6/7000 speed cameras, this is what disgruntled drivers over there are doing, hanging a car tyre over the speed camera of choice, adding some petol and a lighted match.
For details and photos see. http://www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2a.htm
Of course I would never advocate such drastic action in NSW, because here, rational arguments and suggestions to make things safer and fairer for drivers and pedestrians are listened to, and acted upon promptly.
......................................................................

I totally agree with our Premier that speeding in schools zones is dangerous.
But if so many drivers have been caught at Beverly Hills in such a short time, could it be more than just bad driving.
Could there be something not right with the school zone?
What is best for the pedestrian school children at any school zone, for the driver to know when it's school zone time and where the zone is and slow down, or "speed" through unaware and get 10 tickets 3 weeks later?
How does that it help chidren on the day?
Imagine the stess and drama in that household with 10 tickets when those letters were opened.
I said this morning I don't ask for money, but if anyone out there that is cranky enough about this situation and has a bit of spare capital I prepared to stay at Beverly Hills untill something is done, but could do with a little help with bills.
No I haven't been booked, the reason for school zone santa is explained
in the Category "About a school zone santa"
................................................................

To put it simply Mr Roozendaal says that if thousands of drivers have a problem, whatever you do don't enter into a class action, instead write or e-mail him and
he will just ignore you and hope you go away.
One thing about politics in this age is that whatever you say, can come back to bite you later.
I'm still waiting for a reply to my suggestion for repeater flashing lights on a larger school zone sign at Edgbaston st.
(see my emails below)
Back at Beverly hills tommorrow morning.
