Bangor bypass
I e-mailed an observation on the 365 drivers caught by the police (previous page) to the Leader.
We need road rules, but we need sensible rules and limits.
The 70 kmh speed limit on the bypass is ridiculous.
Or maybe I'm missing something, and there is a hazard there I can't see.
Here's what could be classed as a paranoid thought
The number of drivers caught on the bypass would make "good" statistics and before long it could get "Black Spot" status and fixed speed cameras would then be justified to bring the speedsters into line.
there's nothing wrong with speed cameras if the speed limit there is sensible.
How can this road be more dangerous than say the Captain Cook Bridge, where the south side is 90.The other week there was an accident just over the crest heading north and cars came belting over the crest and two of these surprised drivers also collided, not being able to stop in time.
Maybe 90 there is too fast?
At another place drivers are at great risk is when exiting the car parks in the shopping strip at Sylvania heights, because of drivers speeding in the kerb lane going south. Visibility is very limited because of the bend in the road.
Now there's a good spot for a fixed speed camera.
I know there's no such thing as safe speeding and the Police are there to uphold the law.
Don't speed and you won't get caught.
In Sutherland in Merton st between The Princes Hyway and Stapleton ave 90% of drivers every day drive 2-3-4 TIMES the speed limit posted, and I've never seen anyone pulled up.
Why is it so ?
There's a similar "shared zone" area in the Engadine shopping centre.
Why have a speed limit enforced in one place but not another?
Speeding is speeding, but having unrealistic speed limits demeans the whole idea.
Pedestrians have to also take some responsibity when crossing the road.
The way people use the speed humps at the ends of these two
10 kmh "shared zones" as pretend pedestrian crossings is an accident waiting to happen.
