School Zone Santa .Com

I'm back, and so is school and school zones.
Last Thursday morning I noticed a couple of vans and busy workmen swarming over the school zone speed camera at Gymea and that same afternoon, 3 vans were parked on the Eastern footpath at kogarah as they were no doubt fine tuning the cameras there, for the new school term.

What ever came out of the "road users summit"?

One recent change was the nearly halving of the fine for low range speeding,but adding an extra demerit point.

Brilliant! As I've said before it now costs you less, to lose your license faster.

Here's a letter I read in the Sunday Telegraph on the 24/4/05

The NRMA goes to the Police Minister Carl Scully for the stupid plan to increase the demerit points as a trade-off for decreasing fines.
Mr Scully increases the points in the 0-15kl/m range from one to two but didn't reduce the fines.
Enter Micheal Costa, who brags of reducing the fines but now increases the points from two to three in a complete overkill.
Typical of the Carr government.
The fines come down to reflect the trivial nature of the offence,which has nothing to do with hooning, reckless or dangerous driving,but the points increase to three for an offence which, everywhere else, rightly attracts either one or zero points.
Why are NSW motorists unfairly punished?
With double demerit points this long weekend ,stray just 1klm/h over the limit twice and you loose your license.
The NRMA should be ashamed for inflicting this on NSW motorists.
The government should be condemned for it, and should reverse the points impost without reservation.

Last Friday at 7-45 am the first day of the "double demerit point" long weekend I drove to Brighton le sands. Heading south on President ave,on the corner of Civic ave before west Botony street the police had set up a speed trap for drivers coming up from Brighton. The police cars (3) were parked out of sight in Civic Ave and an officer had a radar gun on the nature strip.

Fair enough, if you speed and get caught it's your lookout.

But the problem I have is with the placement of the trap, and trap it was.
Along that section of road there are no side streets or houses, just park and swamp, land earmarked for the M6, where edging above the speed limit could by no stretch of the imagination be considered dangerous.

The police had a motor bike and a car pulled up as I drove past.

It must be a bit like big game hunting at Taronga Park.

The Police involved did themselves or law enforcement no favours that morning
Not a case of winning friends and influencing people.

If they were set up in West Botony Street or Rocky pt Rd with the houses, businesses ,driveways and parked cars along those roads, there'd be no excuse for speeding, and if you do your license so be it.

A little bit of discretion and common sense was needed.
