A selection of letters I've sent to the editor
The above story had a photo of Ms Aston, and then there was this photo in Thursday's Daily Telegraph

Subject: Premier bags Judge
Dear sir,
Premier O?Farrell has had a go at the judge commenting on the intelligence of football fans. (?Premier bags judge for saying fans have a stupid streak.? DT Sept 20 ) The judge may not have been as ?out of touch? as Barry thinks, he may have noticed the reaction of the fans in the Daily Telegraph photo taken as the naked fat fool ran up the field. The crowd seem to be enjoying the extra on field entertainment.
Regards
Hans Stephens

PS
I did a page on it my website www.schoolzonesanta.com The photo I used would?ve been in the Tele July 20 or 21st. I don?t see too many angry spectators.

Some times my letter is shortened (for space reasons)
Dear sir,
Because I feel that bad government thrives on apathy, I?ve over the years tried to alert anyone who would listen, to this fact. Why bother ?they?re all the same? has been a frequent response. After reading the ongoing reports about NSW?s treasurer this week,
(? Pearce to crash after fudging up his travel? DT Thurs) maybe my sceptical friends (and the strangers I?ve bailed up) are right.
How many times do police pull over a car for noticing a minor infringement to also find a boot load of drugs, or the driver is wanted on other matters, and what does Mr. Pearce do while being under intense media scrutiny about allegedly being drunk at work, instead of being on his best behavior he tries to cover-up about being drunk, and it appears he has rorted his travel allowance by going on a private trip to Canberra and if that?s not bad (or arrogant) enough, it was stated he was off work sick at the time. Barry, Barry, Barry don?t tell me that your lot, ARE the same? Call Mr Pearse into your office and tell him he wants to spend more time with his family and friends, and you regret that he?s leaving,
What's this? comes up sometimes when I try to work this PC. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/new-laws-ready-to-target-anti-social-behaviour-this-weekend/story-e6freuy9-1226148482438 Readers of The Daily Telegraph would have asked the same question when they read my letter to the editor on Thursday lastabout Premier O'Farrell's answer to drunken anti- social behaviour.
Editing the letter and leaving out one line can make a big difference , this line was left out of the letter I emailed into the Daily Telegraph
"Well if you are caught intoxicated and disorderly twice in 6 hours you get a $200 fine."
----- Original Message ----- From: stephens1510 To: yoursay@dailytelegraph.com.au Sent: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 8:55 AM Subject: Tough new laws Dear sir, Premier O'Farrell said when announcing new laws, that anti social behaviour and alcohol related violence are one of the biggest challenges facing the Police and the community, So what is the tough new law to ensure that people take personal responsibility for the way they behave? Well if you are caught intoxicated and disorderly twice in 6 hours you get a $200 fine. Whoopi do, if I let my wife out of my car on an empty bus stop so she can more easily hobble in to see her doctor well that can me cost over $200. How many more parents will have to make the decision to turn off life support support systems for a loved one injuried in alcohol related violence before Mr O"Farrell gets serious about this "biggest challenge facing the Police and the community."? ....................................................................... Daily Telegraph 4/4/2010 I came in towards the end of an Alan Jones interview with Minister Simon Crean on radio and when I heard a "risk analysis" was done on beef imports my pupils dilated and I sent into The Daily Telegraph this email.
Alan Jones read out my letter and said a part of the letter was wrong. I wrote what I did because of what I heard on his show. Mr Crean said towards the end of the interview,
"The independent risk analysis will not tell us any more than we already know"

The Age 3/11/09 http://www.theage.com.au/national/letters Soft punishment Dear sir, MELBOURNE had a visit from Jason Williams, an international graffiti vandal who, because he did not get his way (a legal graffiti competition), sprayed ''eight known targets in 13 days'' (The Age, 30/10). Magistrate Ian von Einem sentenced him to nine months' jail, and ordered he pay $15,340 compensation. To show that the magistrate was really treating this as a crime, the sentence was suspended and Williams was allowed to leave Australia, a hero in the graffiti culture, with worldwide publicity. If Williams had been made to clean up his work and then serve nine months in jail, it would have sent a stronger message that defacing property is not clever. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx This letter was printed in the Leader word for word. ----- Original Message ----- From: stephens1510 To: leaderletters@fairfax.com.au Sent: Thursday, November 13, 2008 7:53 PM Subject: Cronulla Railway station carpark. Dear Sir, Des Levins ( your view Nov 13 ) writes about the "ultra secure" Cronulla Railway Station staff car park. Ultra secure is right, a 30 space car park fenced off from us mere mortals by an 8 ft steel fence adorned on top with spikes, and then there's 12, yes twelve, security cameras. It also had a 24 hour security guard because the new "state of the art" electronic gates sometimes malfunctioned and it stuck in the open position so a guard was needed around the clock to keep out the Cronulla desperados. I contacted RailCorp querying this seemingly wanton waste of resources and the Transport Minister Mr David Campbell informed me that he would get the CEO of RailCorp to answer my questions. Mr Ron Manson did write to me and said "that like many areas Cronulla Railway Station has a continuing problem with graffiti, vandalism and theft." and "the electronic gates are now functioning correctly and there is no longer a need for the security guard" Who paid for the 24 hour guards when they were needed, Railcorp / taxpayer, or the firm that installs faulty goods? An 8 ft fence, 12 cameras and a 24 hour security guard for a 30 space car park, and don't get me started on the number of traffic control personnel supposedly needed between Sutherland and Cronulla employed to make sure that passing cars don't damage trucks leaving worksites along the line. No wonder the cost of this project has gone from $108 million to $344 million.... and counting. Photos and the correspondence can be seen on www.schoolzonesanta.com Regards Hans Stephens xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The headline wasn't quite right but my letter would've been noticed and actually was read out by Alan Jones on 2GB.

......................................................................... ----- Original Message ----- From: Hans Stephens To: letters@dailytelegraph.com.au Sent: Sunday, April 16, 2006 10:48 PM Subject: The State Coroner Is there anyone in NSW more qualified to know the ultimate tragic consequence of speeding on our roads than the State Coroner Mr. John Abernethy? He and his office are responsible for investigating the hundreds of road deaths in NSW every year, and here he is caught driving in a school zone at a speed at least 30 kmh over the posted limit. (Sunday Telegraph. 16/4/06) It has been blatantly obvious to everyone for years, (except the RTA it seems) that school zones as they are now don't work For the children's safety, we need to slow down drivers on the day, there's no point in fining someone 4 weeks after a school zone speeding offence, except to alienate good average drivers and gather revenue. Did Mr Abernathy simply igore the all the school zone road markings and signs or was he like the thousands of other drivers caught each week who didn't realise that it was school zone time. What is needed are simple orange flashing lights on the school zone signs to advise drivers of WHEN it's school zone time. It is now nearly 10 months since the end of the RTA flashing light trial with no announcements of the results, or is that to be closer to the election.
