BURRANEER BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL GETS FLASHING LIGHTS
School zone safety campaigner Peter Olsen has today announced that school zone flashing lights have been installed at Burraneer Bay Public School, site of last Thursday’s serious accident involving a young boy.
"Like many schools, Burraneer Bay Public has been begging the RTA (RMS) for years to install flashing lights at the school, which adjoins two busy roads.
"As always the RTA has simply fobbed off the requests with the usual line about how schools are selected based on merit.
"Whilst the recent accident was not speed-related, it highlights how vulnerable young children are around schools and why flashing lights are needed at all school zones.
"The lights were installed over the weekend at no charge. They were installed on both Burraneer Bay Rd and Gannons Rd, unlike the RTA’s lights which are only ever installed in one school zone per school.
"I have once again demonstrated that reliable and effective flashing lights can be installed for a fraction of the cost of the RTA’s lights ($116,000 per school zone + $5,000 pa. for maintenance).
“I again call on the RTA and Government to adopt more cost effective technology so that flashing lights can be installed at all school zones. The lights need to be installed before accidents happen, not after.
