Mr Busby has to reapply for his job, is there any chance his appilcation will be rejected?

"Auditor-general Peter Achterstraat's investigation into the state's fixed and mobile "safety" cameras is also likely to bring big changes, Mr Stoner said.

"If he comes back to us and says 'Well, clearly this camera's got no impact on road safety' it's gone. And it will go somewhere that it does, or if they can't say where there's an alternative site, then its gone completely.""

A big call Mr Stoner

One of the pre election mantras was the intention to "rip out" any speed camera found to be inneffective and purely revenue raising.
The speed camera audit findings are coming out in the next few days, well in July anyway.

As the RTA has already said that some cameras are ineffective there should be no delay in announcing their removal, or relocation

..................................................................................................................................................

The RTA has advised the NSW Government there are already some cameras it has targeted as ineffective and these will obviously be closely assessed in audit," Mr O'Farrell said

Subject: speed camers work

Dear minister Gay,
I saw you on TV tonight speaking on the subject of speed cameras. You said any cameras found to be purely revenue raising will be ripped out.
Any speed camera will slow most drivers down, so as they do slow cars, they are doing their job.
Every media story on speed cameras focuses on the amount of "revenue" they make, not on the fact that they do slow most drivers.
You have a problem, if there is an bad accident at the site of a "ripped out" speed camera the story will change in the media, and of course in the House, asking why this "effective" road safety device was removed, with talk of knee jerk reaction etc.
The much mentioned variable speed cameras at Cleveland st Moore Park raised over $17 million in four years, can you tell me how much of this figure was raised outside of school zone time?
Nobody is against slowing down for kids during school zone time, but to be done for cruising through that deserted area a few kl/mh over at 2.0 am, would be the cause of most of the angst at that site. I think that switching off the variable speed function at the Moore Park site would go a long way in the public relation department concerning speed cameras without greatly compromising road safety.

Yours faithfully

From the reply above "any reduction or increase of speed camera programs will be based on the audit, and determined on road safety grounds"

That means the audit will find that speed cameras ARE effective in slowing down cars and a couple of obsolete ones will be "ripped out" for show, and then roll 'em out in the "interest of road safety"

When the result of the NSW speed camera audit comes out next month what will we be told?

Maybe that:

Speed cameras ARE effective in slowing down drivers.

Being as they are effective, having more would slow down even more drivers.

The only ones complaining would be bad drivers.

Simple, don't speed and you don't get caught.

So in the interest of road safety the 40 new mobile speed camera vans will be rolled out.

and by the way a couple of obsolete non productive fixed speed cameras will (as promised) be "ripped out"

Subject: What a difference an election win makes

Dear sir,
Once again the Cleveland st Moore Park speed cameras top the list in revenue collected from speeding drivers. ("Camera eyes on revenue" Mon 13) The one thing never mentioned is that the cameras at Moore Park are in a school zone understandably installed there for the school kids safety. These cameras being of the "variable speed" variety also catch out drivers cruising through that site a few clicks over the artificially low (for the area)speed limit after school zone time. I have emailed the Roads Minister and the Premier suggesting that the vast bulk of the fines at this site would be for minor after school zone time infractions, and as a public relation exercise they could turn off the after hours function. But what a difference an election win makes, because before the March election it took 8 hours to get a personal reply to an email to the then opposition leader Mr O'Farrell, but now there is no acknowledgement of my emails from the Premier, his office, or his Roads Minister Gay or anyone from his office.

regards Hans Stephens
..................................................................................................................................................

Next month the results of the speed camera audit will come out, a couple of old non producing cameras "will be ripped out" the rest will be deemed "effective" for road safety, and in the interest in even more road safety out will come the 40 new privately run mobil speed cameras

It is only police in unmarked cars that catch the real idiots on our roads, like the woman texting at 80 kl/mh in front of me on Southern cross drive last week..... not speed cameras

Millions of dollars reaped from cameras

Speed cameras rake in millions at Beverly Hills and Kogarah
(From the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader 9 JUNE)

SPEED cameras at Beverly Hills and Kogarah have been among the top revenue raisers over the past five years.

http://www.theleader.com.au/news/local/news/general/speed-cameras-rake-in-millions-at-beverly-hills-and-kogarah/2189478.aspx

The highest revenue earners in NSW would be the "variable speed" cameras in school zones.

The highest earner in fact being the Cleveland st Moore Park school zone

How much would these Moore Park cameras earn if they switched off after school zone time and didn't catch the cars cruising through this deserted area after hours?

The road minister's office hasn't replied to my request for the breakdown of figures at that school zone.
.........................................................................

"Road safety experts have repeatedly pointed to evidence showing speed cameras save lives, but Mr O'Farrell said his government preferred visible marked highway patrol cars to nab speeding drivers."

http://smh.drive.com.au/roads-and-traffic/speed-camera-audit-to-target-cash-cows-20110407-1d680.html
..................................................................................................................................................

What a lot of nonsense, a couple of old speed cameras that don't make much money will be removed, and "in the interest of road safety" the ordered 40 new mobil speed camera vans will be rolled out, because the audit found that speed cameras ARE effective.

Fashion Confidential

May 29th, 2011

My letter wasn't printed

..................................................................................................................................................

Last Saturday's edition of The Daily Telegraph had this photo to show off a fashion garment.

Now I like any photo of any good looking young lady, but I'm afraid this photo made me think she was getting ready for a pap smear.

Aren't there other fashion shots availiable to print with a more normal pose?

Didn't one person at the Telegraph think that this sort of photo wasn't really necessary to print?

I could ask Sydney Confidential why of the need to use a photo like this, but it would be a case of "Ask someone who cares" as when I asked all 150 Federal Politicians for an opinion on the adult content AMI ads on daytime radio.

Although politicians seem to like kids, it appears as can be seen on my other website www.protect kids.com.au that their care is as illusionary as their sincerity in photo using kids to get votes.

Subject: Barry's proud boast

Dear sir,
My team is the busiest says Premier Barry O'Farrell. ("Barry's proud boasts" May 17) Once again the audit of speed cameras is mentioned and Mr O'Farrell has promised to "rip out " any speed camera found to be purely revenue raising. I would say that to remove any cameras is a bit risky because any future accident at that location will be blamed on "knee jerk" reaction to criticism of speed cameras.
The Cleveland st Moore Park variable speed cameras made over $17 million dollars in 4 years and the vast majority of the infringements would be for "speeding" outside of school zone hours.
A simple solution the stop the perceived unfair hammering of drivers at that location is to switch off the variable part of those speed cameras.
Unlike the speedy breaking of the solar rebate contracts which were COSTING millions, any change to the speed camera regime I think will be very tardy as they MAKE millions, and any change will always be trumped by the " it's for road safety " disclaimer.
The forty new mobile speed cameras will be on the road in July not for revenue raising but for "road safety"
For real road safety, more Police in unmarked cars, not speed cameras.

Regards
Hans Stephens

I emailed the Premier:

..................................................................................................................................................

Dear Mr O'Farrell,
I wrote to the Daily Telegraph yesterday commenting on an article in the paper the previous day.
The letters editor took out enough to make it appear although I can whinge, I haven't any ideas to help.
My full email is on my website www.schoolzonesanta.com. Don't speed and you won't get caught easily said, but if people complain about speed cameras now, wait till you roll out the new 40 mobile ones.
By what criteria does the RTA label a speed camera ineffective?
A cynic would suggest one that doesn't make enough money.
Why did I email the paper and not say, the roads Minister, well I did asking for one miserable extra sign to help drivers at the Kogarah Princes Highway school zone and no reply.
I emailed a previous Roads Minister Mr Roozendal, 4 times with no reply till after a letter in the Telegraph pointing out this lack of courtesy.
A couple of ideas to improve road safety and make money, anyone caught using a mobil while driving (everyone knows that's illegal ) $600 fine, 2nd offence $1000.
Wheel clamp cars of fine defaulters or those driving unlicensed as they do in other Sates and overseas.
That would show bottle and strong leadership.
Fine the parents of any minor caught out late at night doing graffiti $1000. Then they'll wonder where 14 yo Billy is at 2am
Send older graffiti vandals to graffiti camp, where for a month they clean paint off previously prepared walls. Not somewhere that costs over $500 a day but a place like Sheriff Joe's tent city.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio#Actions_as_Maricopa_County_Sheriff
There has to be consequences for bad behaviour, assult a Police officer and that means a minimum month in a tent prison, no TV, no X box, plain food and time to realise that Police are to be respected.
Policy like this would be appluded by the majority.
To run a State like NSW costs a lot of money, but how much is wasted. How much is spent running the RTA for example, and how much on actually spent on doing the shovel work.. Google ICAC and "past investigations" and that shows where there is more waste.
I voted for Mr Annesly.

Regards
Hans Stephens

Very expensive flashing lights were installed at the school zone on President Ave Gymea a few years ago.
Flashing is really a bad describtion because they didn't flash, rather they slowly went on .... off on ..... off.

"Flashing" too slowly to really attract attention.

So after the intitial cost and the yearly maintenance charges these ones were ripped out at Gymea on Thurs and replaced with more expensive ones, but at least the new ones will work.

Saturday June 19 - The West Australian

http://www.policespeedcameras.info/politics.html

In all of his recent statements about WA's massive increase in speed cameras, Police Minister Rob Johnson has been scrupulously silent on how the extra money raked in through fines will be spent. And we're not talking peanuts here.

Over the coming four financial years, an extra $250 million will flow to the Government from speed and red-light fines.

While the minister has been silent, the recent State Budget papers speak volumes.

They show the fines growing from $37.2 million this financial year to $92.9 million next year as the revenue from 67 new cameras pours into Sate coffers.

But the following years are the ones that make the most interesting reading. In 2011-12 and the two years after that for which the Budget projects revenue, the Government has written in red-light and speed fines at $112.0 million annually.

What that tells us is that four years down the track of this new regime of speed control, the Government expects no discernible change in driver behaviour. The fines revenue remains static.

It wouldn't happen here, or would it?

Now you "angered outsider" might think that this sort of vandalism
is a non event, but I'm sure that if this happened to your property you
might think differently.
There are of course are more serious crimes than graffiti, but there are
other ways to show off artistic talent than to damage other people's
property.

Anti--Carbon tax rally Blacktown

April 9th, 2011

Beautiful day for a peaceful rally with great speakers and protesters

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/climate-change/pro-and-anticarbon-tax-protesters-take-to-streets-20110409-1d8h3.html

....................................................................................................................................................

The Foxtel news had vision of the Blacktown anti-carbon tax rally saying "thousands" attended.

The Foxtel side bar printed story was very much pro carbon tax

......................................................................

"THE RALLIES (in Hyde park and Brisbane) WERE LAUNCHED TO COUNTER AN AGRESSIVE ANTI-TAX RALLY OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT HOUSE LATE LAST MONTH, WHEN PROTESTERS HURLED INSULTS AND SHOOK OFFENSIVE PLACARDS AIMED AT PRIME MINISTER JULIE GILLARD"

"GRASS ROOTS ADVOCACY GROUP GETUP SAID THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT BE SWAYED BY A VOCAL MINORITY THAT'S AGAINST THE TAX"

....................................................................................................................................................

GetUp a "GRASS ROOTS" advocacy group, yea right.

......................................................................

As happened with the pink batt "get rich quick" scheme, the crooks will come out to play when this carbon thing gets going....

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/revealed-scandal-of-carbon-credit-firm-20110407-1d6a4.html

.........................................................................

how many really turned up for the "we love carbon tax rally"?

"THOUSANDS turned out to support climate action at a family friendly gathering in Brisbane's King George Square yesterday."

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/climate-change/protest-puts-positive-spin-on-climate-action-20110409-1d8ro.html

and another report

"Hundreds turned out at Brisbane's King George Square on Saturday to support action on climate change"

http://bigpondnews.com/articles/TopStories/2011/04/09/Swan_joins_pro-carbon-tax_rally_599328.html

So what was it, thousands or hundreds?

The Getup rally in Brisbane a "grass roots" advocacy group that get handed posters to wave about.

Much like at the Sydney Getup rally

compared to the violent extremists below who are against a carbon tax.

Bring out the riot squad and the water cannon.

I'll rip out cash cow cameras

April 7th, 2011

"I'll rip out cash cow cameras" said Premier Barry O'Farrell.

My letter on 24 March

http://schoolzonesanta.com/index.php/2011/03/24/speed_cameras_nsw

More Police in unmarked cars to catch the real menace on our roads.
Start with a fine of $1000 dollars if caught using a mobil phone in the car while driving.
An automatic 12 months suspension if caught texting while driving.

An article on the Daily Telegraph website was similar to the NSM one above.

One line though, caught my eye.

The audit "ticked off" on another election promise of the new government, Mr O'Farrell said.

Is it like ticking off the boxes to appear to be doing stuff or actually doing it?

The proof is in the pudding as they say.

Thousands demonstrate for and against carbon tax

April 3rd, 2011

Thousands of people turned up for the event on Saturday morning, many waving derogatory banners and placards aimed at Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Greens leader Bob Brown.

Some of the Police ready to step in to quell any extremist violence

I would think she is NOT a green voter

Nine NSM News said that the Hyde Park anti carbon people were like the ones "bused" into Canberra for last weeks rally.

Bussed in my foot, transport was arranged so ordiary folk to buy a seat to get to Canberra.

Pick which is more likely to be the Rent a Crowd?

The "extremists" in photo A

Or these ones in Photo B

I can't help but notice something a little bit organised with the signs in photo B.

Sorry you couldn't make the Hyde Park rally Spike, next one?

First things first.

I get a little disillusioned at times, I emailed the paper yesterday and
they didn't print it. I wonder why?

A new Government is elected for NSW, lots to do and needing lots of money to do it.

NSW is a shambles

Dear Sir/ madam.
It's agreed, hospitals, roads, trains, police and infrastructure all need fixing. But before this is started and new contracts are handed out to "preferred" contractors, the most urgent task for our new Premier is to weed out the sort of Government contactors and facilitators, like the ones mentioned in "past investigations" on the ICAC website. Untold millions can be saved with a more diligent oversight.of how our money is spent.
Premier O'Farrell you're the boss, use your voter given large mandate, march into the RTA and RailCorp headquarters throw your weight around and clear out the rubbish. Find out why for example, the cost of the Sutherland to Cronulla rail line duplication went from $106 million to $231 million and was completed years behind schedule, and then go to the Education Department, The Health......

Regards
Hans Stephens
........................................................................

Is my letter offensive, over the top, hysterical or extremist (sorry violently extremist)?

Why when so much money is wasted, shouldn't taking better care of it, be a priority?

Margin for error on speeding reduced to zero

March 29th, 2011

That will real good for people's licences when the next 40 mobil speed cameras are rolled out in July.

http://smh.drive.com.au/motor-news/margin-for-error-on-speeding-reduced-to-zero-20110324-1c8kp.html

Maybe after July there will be enough in kitty to afford an extra school zone advisory sign on the highway opposite South St Kogarah

Enough signs for South st.

March 28th, 2011

I had asked the roads Minister to see about an extra sign at South st Kogarah for drivers entering the school zone there

http://schoolzonesanta.com/index.php/2011/01/14/south_st_reminder

Today I received a reply from the RTA

I gave an example of a traffic facing sign at Blakehurst and I'm sure more cars enter the Kogarah school zone than the Blakehurst side st.

I'll check the number of pavement markings and school signs at Blakehurst before emailing back, I think the revenue raised by the Kogarah speed cameras would pay for one little extra sign

.........................................................................................................................................

UPDATE;

Naturally if a sign isn't needed fair enough, but why have one at Blakehurst (photo #1) and then not at the very busy South Steet(Photo #2) and please explain if there seems to be a worry about too many signs, the need for three 50 kl/mh signs (Photo #3)in in one spot in Oyster bay when it's 50 for miles around.

Blakehurst #1

South St #2

Oyster Bay #3 with it's three 50 signs. Why?

Speed cameras NSW

March 24th, 2011

The mobile speed cameras are to be allowed to set up in 3000 more locations, what a surprize

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/sydney-nsw/three-thousand-more-speed-cameras-set-to-sting/story-e6freuzi-1226026363929

I emailed the Daily Telegraph.

....................................................................................................................................................

If the State Government wants more money, stop the waste and better manage what comes in now.

This morning's cartoon in The Daily Telegraph reminds me of one way to show sensible responsible leadership.

This was written in CRIKEY today:

"His (Barry O'Farrell's) emphasis will be on discipline, proper practice, improving the economy and in general reassuring voters they have elected a responsible government,"

...................................................................................................................................................

What very well could happen, is that next in line to syncronise watches are the ponytailed cosultants and preferred contracters with their fancy imported furniture etc to redecorate the offices of the new ministers and their staff.

We've seen it all before, $500,000 to tart up two rooms.

I did email the Daily Telegraph along these lines but the letter didn't make the cut.

The Channel 9 website says there were over 1000 people there.
Why not say there were over 10 people there, that is a similar distortion of the truth.

Core promise or just a promise?

March 15th, 2011

"ALMOST 500 school zones will be equipped with flashing lights under a Coalition government."

The Telegraph link below seems now to have a shelf life, so I've put up the whole article

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw-act/flashing-lights-in-school-zones-an-election-promise/story-e6freuzi-1226000483077

ALMOST 500 school zones will be equipped with flashing lights under a Coalition government.
The first Sydney schools to get the safety lights, if the Coalition wins next month's election, are Mount Annan Public School, East Hills Boys High and Carlton South Public.

Only 566 of the state's 10,000 schools currently have the lights despite a rollout by the State Government beginning in 2002.

Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell yesterday attacked the Government for spending up to $91,000 on each set and said he could do the same job for less.

"The lack of flashing lights not only compromises the safety of our children but also poses a hazard for motorists with many being stung by fines as a result of being caught by speed cameras," Mr O'Farrell said.

The first regional schools to benefit would be Tamworth Public, Millfield at Cessnock, Hastings Public at Port Macquarie, Gunnedah Public, Walcha Central School, South Dubbo Public and Kelso Public.

Opposition roads spokesman Andrew Stoner said motorists needed warning instead of being fined for speeding when they were unaware they were driving in a school zone.

Speaking later at the National's Sydney campaign launch, Mr Stoner described the March election as one of the most important political decisions NSW voters would make.

It was clear what their message was going to be.

"We barely have a State Government in NSW; when it comes to Labor, we have a soap opera masquerading as a political party," he told a packed audience, including Mr O'Farrell, last night.

"We've seen every sick, sordid scandal under the sun."

The Sydney launch was a prelude to the party's main campaign set piece in Dubbo on February 27.

I have googled other links re the same story (above) and nowhere is there a time frame mentioned for the installation completion of these extra 500.......WHY?

and what about all the other schools in NSW?

Unless the new Government after March tackles the RTA and their waste the school zone flashing light roll out will take forever.

What waste?

I googled ICAC NSW RTA and presto, about 42,600 results (0.25 sec)

Where will it end?

March 15th, 2011

As my other website wwww.protectkids.com.au shows, I don't just think about speed cameras and cars.

I saw a Foxtel doco this week about a lady who thought the TV show "Married with children" when it first came out wasn't suitable viewing, and didn't just change the channel.

She wrote to all the advertisers on the show and they listened.

http://www.bundyology.com/rakolta.html

But the line that "any pubicity is good publicity" sadly made the show a ratings hit because everyone was talking about her stand.

Watching just the ads for upcoming episodes of "One and a half men" which is now considered "entertainement," shows how far we as a society, has sunk.

Charlie Sheen a real role model

http://www.execdigital.com/lifestyle/heroes-and-zeroes/harder-cbs-star-charlie-sheen-parties-more-we-him

Mr Sheen is an actor that every young man can look up to.

It's no wonder kids are going off the rails today.

Who is looking after the kids, when it's adults who produce, and I assume adult TV bosses think this sort of infantile crap is great prime time viewing?

Would Kerry Packer have allowed this show on TCN 9 when he was boss?
